MEET JAMEEL

Leadership that listens.

Detroit Public Schools shaped my future. As a child psychologist, healthcare leader, former educator, and proud DPSCD graduate, I'm running for the Detroit Public Schools Community District Board of Education to help ensure every child has access to an excellent education and every decision is guided by accountability, transparency, and student success.

DETROIT ROOTS

Rooted in Detroit. Focused on every student’s future.

A proud Detroit native, Detroit Public Schools graduate, and Cass Technical High School alum, Dr. Smith understands the life-changing impact a quality public education can have on a child and a community.

Professional Experience — Dr. Smith is a licensed child psychologist, healthcare leader, and former educator with a career dedicated to helping children, families, and communities thrive. She currently leads behavioral health psychotherapy services for one of Michigan’s largest healthcare systems, overseeing programs that improve access to care, strengthen teams, and deliver measurable results.

Governance & Leadership — Her experience extends beyond healthcare. She has served as Chair of the Detroit Board of Ethics, chaired the Governance Committee of the Roeper School Board, and currently serves on nonprofit boards focused on youth development and education. These experiences have prepared her to provide thoughtful oversight, strategic leadership, and accountability.

Community Commitment — Throughout her career, she has worked alongside schools, families, healthcare organizations, and community partners to improve outcomes for children. Her commitment has always been to service, collaboration, and creating opportunities for young people to succeed.

Why She’s Running — Detroit Public Schools Community District has made meaningful progress, and she believes now is the time to build on that momentum. She is running because every student deserves excellent opportunities, every family deserves transparency and accountability, and every decision made by the Board should be focused on improving student outcomes.

POLICY PRIORITIES

Building a stronger district for every student.

Strong Literacy & Academic Achievement

I will keep literacy and student achievement at the center of my work on the Board. I will support evidence-based approaches to literacy and regularly examine whether students are making meaningful academic progress—not just whether districtwide proficiency rates are changing.

Supporting the Whole Child

I will work to ensure that students have the academic, developmental, physical, and emotional supports they need to learn and thrive. I will prioritize strong special education and Exceptional Student Education services, accessible mental health supports, school-based health resources, and safe, welcoming school environments.

Accountability, Transparency & Continuous Improvement

I will work to make accountability and transparency part of how the Board governs, not simply something we talk about when there is a problem. I will push for clear goals and accessible Board-level dashboards and reporting so families and the community can understand the district’s progress and priorities.
